BOOKS
"HARD TACK AND COFFEE" by John D. Billings
Originally published in 1888, author John Billings had served with the Army of the Potomac during the Civil War. He joined forces with illustrator Charles Reed and utilized the many sketches of field life Reed had made during the Civil War to enliven an already fascinating text with pen and ink drawings of all aspects of a soldier's life. Included in this classic are chapters on living quarters, foraging, wagon trains, army rations, offences and punishments, equipment, the army mule, hospitals and much more.
"JEFF SHAARA'S CIVIL WAR BATTLEFIELDS"
Jeff Shaara gives a remarkable guided tour of the ten Civil War battlefields every American should visit: Shiloh, Antietam, Fredericksburg/Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Vicksburg, New Market, Chickamauga, the Wilderness/Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor and Petersburg/Appomattox. Shaara explores the history, the people and the places that capture the true meaning and magnitude of the conflict.
"SOUTH OF SHILOH" by Chuck Logan
A nameless sniper is targeting participants in popular civil war battle reenactments, and Minnesota reenactor Paul Eden is killed at the mock battle of Kirby Creek, near Corinth, Mississippi. His death is ruled an accident, but Paul's widow, Jenny, discovers that the sniper's bullet was meant for the man standing next to Paul, a cop named Kenny Beeman. To penetrate the Mississippi smokescreen, Jenny enlists the aid of her former lover, news photographer John Rane. Appearing to be covering a story, Rane pokes into the Tennessee-Mississippi border country and teams up with Beeman. With demons nipping at his heals, Rane packs a Sharps rifle and live ammunition and heads off to the Shiloh battlefield - and a showdown with a killer.
"THE CIVIL WAR ON THE WEB" by Alice Carter & Richard Jensen
Features detailed reviews of the top 100 sites; a one to five rating of each site's content, aesthetics and navigation.
"CONFEDERATES IN THE ATTIC" by Tony Horwitz
Dispatches from the UNFINISHED Civil War demonstrates that the Civil War still rages across the South in ways both quirky and compelling. Pulitzer prize winner Tony Horwitz takes the reader on a ten-state adventure, probing both the history of the war and its potent echo in the present. Horwitz crafts an eloquent, fast paced and penetrating travelogue that shows us how the lost cause still resonates in the memory and rituals of the South.
